WHEN VISITING WAIPIʻO VALLEY...
Before visiting any Wahi Pana "Sacred Place", it is important that you understand where you are going and what you will be doing. The history you are seeking in learning, about the utilization and the spirituality of the place. And you need to realize that wherever and whenever you go into the forest or the ocean – you are entering as guests and you cannot automatically assume that you are welcome here or there. From this perspective, you may develop a proper attitude as to humility and humbleness with one that shifts to ones focus from oneself to your surroundings. One is needed to blend with the Elements of Nature such as the sun, the clouds, the wind, and the rain to be adherent to devote oneself to be a steward.
Before approaching any Wahi Pana "sacred place", in specially Waipiʻo Valley "The Valley of the Kings" traditional protocol is required, that you may ask permission of our Kūpuna (Ancestors), as you give thanks for the privilege of visiting, and you offer an explanation for any negativity you may unwittingly bring or do at the site.
While near our Wahi Pana, continued reverent and respectful silence is the best behavior so as not to disturb the Harmony of the place or the fauna and flora that reside therein. Silent prayers may be offered in recognition of the Spirituality of the place with an understanding that anything you bring with you affects that spirituality. You need to be aware that you become a part of the place and the place becomes a part of you simply because of your presence.
You should always respect the Palena "borders", boundaries, and Kapū (off limits) areas of our Wahi Pana "sacred sites". If not marked, use the outer edge of the stone or wood structure as your limit of viewing.
